Ancient Botsrah

Recently one of my brothers, my parents, and I took a trip visiting towns along the King’s Highway.  One of the towns was Busira. Outside of the modern town of Busira are some ruins that can be visited today. These are believed to be the ancient ruins of Botsrah. In this post, I will share about Ancient Botsrah.

Ancient Botsrah is believed to be the first capital of Edom.  It is usually associated with Edom when it appears in the Bible (Isa. 34:6, Isa. 63:1, Jer. 49:22).  In one instance, it appears in conjunction with the region of Moab (Jer. 48:24) which borders Edom. Furthermore, Botsrah is mentioned in the book of Amos with the region of Teman. Teman is in the southern part of Jordan and is another name for the region of Edom. All biblical evidence points to the ancient city of Botsrah being in Edom, which is in the modern-day country of Jordan.

There are at least three places in the Bible where YHWH prophesied the destruction of the ancient city of Botsrah.

Isaiah 34:6  “The sword of יהוה shall be filled with blood, it shall be made overflowing with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For יהוה has a slaughtering in Botsrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Eḏom.

Amos 1:12  “But I shall send fire upon Těman, and it shall consume the palaces of Botsrah.”

Jeremiah 49:13  “For I have sworn by Myself,” declares יהוה, “that Botsrah is to become a ruin, a reproach, a waste, and a curse, and all its cities become everlasting wastes.”

This is a picture that we took while we explored the probable ruins of Botsrah. In Jeremiah 49:13, YHWH said that He would destroy Botsrah. We can testify that Botsrah is in ruins. This prophecy was fulfilled. Because we can see these ruins, and that the ancient city does not exist today, it is an example to us that YHWH’s prophecies are true.

From the map, you can see that the town of Busira is under the Eagle’s wings. It’s also southeast of the Salt Sea/Dead Sea.

Jeremiah 49:22  See, like an eagle he flies up, and spreads his wings over Botsrah. And the heart of the mighty men of Eḏom in that day shall be like the heart of a woman in her pain.

In the context of Jeremiah 49, the land of Edom is being destroyed. However, there is this place called Botsrah in Edom that is protected under the wings of the eagle. We believe this to be a future prophecy that will take place before the Return of Yahushua. Since this post is about Ancient Botsrah, I will not go into much detail, but we believe from Scripture that the future Botsrah will also be under the eagle’s wings.
